As a way to give honor to the model farmers and fisherfolks who continue to make a difference in the field of agriculture that contributes a lot to its advancement, an annual Gawad Saka contest is conducted nationwide to select the best.

Having been adjudged as this year’s national winner for Gawad Saka Outstanding Small Farmers/Fisherfolk Organization, the Abrasa Multi-Purpose Cooperative as represented by its Board of Director, Chief Executive Officer, Finance Manager and Human Resource Management and Development Supervisor received the award during the 27th year Anniversary of Philrice and launching of 2013 as the National Year of Rice on November 13, 2012 at the Philrice Crop Processing Shed, Philrice Central Experimentation Station, Brgy. Maligaya, Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija.

President Benigno Aquino was the guest of the awarding but due to heavy rain, he wasn’t able to come thus represented by DA Secretary Proceso Alcala. In the President’s message, he said “Bukambibig po nila kung gaano kahusay magturo ang mga dalubhasang Pilipinomula sa IRR, UP Los Baños, Central Luzon State University, Philrice, at iba pang Institusyon dito sa Pilipinas. Kapansin-pansin po tayo ang kinikilala nilang guro sa larangan ng agrikultura, pero para bang hindi tayo nakinig sa sarili nating leksyon. Ang resulta; ang mga bansang tinuruan natin, binebentahan tayo ng bigas, habang tayo ay naiwang bumibili mula sa kanila. Nakakabahala po talaga.” With this, he left a challenge to all delegates and every Filipino-Farmer.

Present during the awarding were employees from the Department of Agriculture, Governors and Mayors of the awardees. Our Governor Hon. Junie E. Cua, together with the Provincial Agriculturist, Mr. Pedro Garcia and PAFC Chairman, Mr. Dante B. Tobias joined Abrasa in receiving the award.

25 awardees summed-up the individual and group category for this year’s contest. A project grant and cash prize ranging from P100,000.00 to P1million pesos was given to the winners according to their category.
